Annual or perennial herbs with simple, alternate leaves that have sheathing bases. Flowers are bisexual and may appear alone or in clusters like cymes or umbels, located at the stem tips or leaf axils. Sometimes the flowers are enclosed in a protective bract called a spathe. Flowers can be radially or bilaterally symmetrical. The fruit is a capsule.
