Annual or perennial grass-like plants. Leaves are narrow, arranged in three ranks, and grow from the base or alternate along the stem. Flower clusters can be simple spikes, umbellate, head-like, or paniculate. Flowers are green or brown, each with a small scale beneath it, arranged spirally or distichously. They lack typical petals and instead may have bristle-like structures.
