Perennial herbs that grow from rhizomes or evergreen shrubs, some with spiny stems or leaf edges. Leaves are alternate and can be simple or compound. Flowers are bisexual, either solitary or in clusters, and have radial symmetry. The fruit is a berry or capsule.
